Still looking for the BIG ONE!

« on: July 27, 2010, 12:13:12 AM »

Well I have been reading so many things on tying, really just trying to perfect something.  It looks easier than it is.  I saw a recipe in a mag I think Fly Tier on a bead case caddis, anyone else see it?  Well my wife was picking up some beads for a friend that makes jewerly and I saw the tiny beads that would work so I bought three different colors.  Enough beads to last me ALONG time.  You apply the beads with 5 minute epoxy.  This article had no warnings about the epoxy, to say the least I had hundreds of little glass beads bonded to my skin.  Hackle, feathers everything was sticking to me.  Fish Slap.  Five minute epoxy is hard to get off, thank god for finger nail polish remover. I finally pulled it off for three flies which if I can find a camera that will zoom in and focus well enough I will post pictures of them.  Been tying some damselfly nymph's as well, using the bead chain and trying to make my own eyes out of mono.  Gonna try to make some foam hoppers soon.  Anyone ever use a hopper foam body cutter?  Or the better question is does anyone know where to get these here in town?  Los Pinos does not have these.  Looking for something like this http://www.riverroadcreations.com/HopperBody.htm
Any advice on making a body for a hopper?

Sounds like a pain in the butt to me!!!  I tie glass bead caddis, but dont use any kind of epoxy or anything....Im interested to see what you ended up with!!  As far as foam cutters, Charlies used to sell them.  We used them all the time for hoppers, stoneflies, etc.  Or you can just use scissors, thats what I do.   Thumbsup 2

hey Gud, you have pictures of your bead cased caddis?

I need to go to Charlies, I was told that they had a video (Bugs Of The Underworld) I might be able to rent, I'll check to see if they have those cutters when I am there.

So i havent seen a bead cased caddis but i'm about to google it lol.  when i tie with beads i try to slide them onto the shank of the hook and dub in between the beads. this may not be the case with the bead cased caddis but this is my method i have tied up quite a few caddis larva and they always work prety well in the close by streams hope this helps

Ok had my daughter take these pictures with her HTC Droid phone.  Only camera in the house that would take a clear picture.  Each picture is a different fly.  So what do ya think?  Honestly.  Ok Gud where's your pictures?

Well, I know what pattern you are trying to tie now that I see it, but in my honest opinion its WAY too much work for what its worth!  Unless your trying to get into tying realistic flies, theres way easier ways to tie caddis flies!  I really dont fish "cased" caddis flies....I dont think there is a time where fish will be keying in on "cased caddis" rather than the caddis larva itself.  here is one of my favorite caddis flies, tied with beads.

And I came across this one whiles surfin the web.....definitely an easy tie and probably DEADLY!!!

This is a casing you can buy at the store, and put on a hook if you want to tie cased caddis without the hassle of gluing beads!

And this is what Im assuming you are trying to duplicate??

The patterns Gud posted are what i am familiar with i have seen and fished the cased caddis in pic #2 and can tie up some like pic #1 and maybe #2 but i personaly think the bead cased caddis looks like alot of work but their has to be a easyier way to do it with out the glue maybe like stringing the beads onto a piece of wire wrapping it around the shank of the hook tie it off realy good and use some knot sence the kind that hardens with the little uv light to kinda glue it all together it hardens up pretty good and i would also give it a glossyer look i use that stuff on thread midges and it gives it a realy nice gloss dont even  Confused 1 know if this would work but its food for thought ????????????????   Cheers

Yep the glue was not real fun or ideal for the small hook.  Like I said I found the pattern in the Fly Tyer mag.  Looked easy although the glue was setting up at different times.  Messy. I am sure it will catch fish though.  I like that pic # 1 and # 2.  Do you know the exact name for the pattern in picture # 2?
